Introductions Introduction Activity
A) Take 3-4 minutes each to introduce yourself to your partner and answer the following 4 questions. Your partner should take notes. Each person should be ready to introduce his or her partner to the group:
1) Name? Preferred name or nickname?
2) Employment position (now or in the recent past)?
3) Primary areas for research?
4) One little known fact about you OR tell about an object that has meaning for you and why?
B) Partner introduces you to the whole group (Take 1-2 minutes).

First Article Critique
Assignment
  • Review the Article Critique guidelines on the course website.
  • The purpose of the research critiques is to practice and improve your written critical review of empirical research. You will do one critique informally, taking notes first at home and then, working in a small group in class on 1/22/18.
  • See our example of Yoshida reading notes here
  • Be ready to turn in your article critique notes on the Yoshida reading before class on 1/22/18 — submit to “Article Critique 1 Notes” Dropbox on D2L.
  • Be ready with your notes in class on 1/22 to share your ideas in your small group.
  • This first critique is meant to prepare you for the second more formal written Article Critique 2, which you will do individually.

Look Ahead
  • Educational Psychology Overview: Read Sawyer, Bransford, Yoshida
    Online Discussion
  • Post your initial response to discussion questions in the online forum by midnight (PST) Thursday, January 18.
  • Respond to at least two classmates per question by midnight (PST) Saturday, January 20.
  • BG #1 Summary of the Week 2 Discussion – Due in the Discussion Forum by Monday at 12:00 noon EST, January 22
  • Article Critique 1 Notes on the Yoshida reading due before class Monday, January 22 –> Submit to “Article Critique 1 Notes” Dropbox on D2L.  Be sure to address all 14 elements of the Article Critique guidelines in your notes.
