Hi Minnie,
Thanks so much for your introduction! My full name is Christine Greenhow, and I am your instructor for this course, but please call me “Chris.” I’m an Associate Professor in the Educational Psychology and Educational Technology (EPET) program here at Michigan State, and I’m really excited to be teaching this course and to have you all in it! I’ve been at MSU since 2012 and earned tenure in 2016. Prior to arriving at MSU, I was an Assistant Professor in the College of Education and the School of Information Studies (iSchool) at the University of Maryland, College Park. I also completed postdoctoral work at the University of Minnesota and at the Information & Society Project at Yale University, which resulted in a book: Social Media and Education: Toward a Digital Future (2016). https://mitpress.mit.edu/books/education-and-social-media. Before becoming a scholar, I was a public high school teacher in the Boston, MA area (where I am from), a management consultant, account representative in a technology start-up, and co-founder of an educational nonprofit called College Possible. All these previous jobs kept leading me back to my first passion: education! When I’m not working I like to run, ski, hike with my family, walk my two dogs, and watch movies or series like Black Mirror on Netflix. For more about me, see the MSU Bio page here: http://education.msu.edu/searc…..ow@msu.edu or my website: http://cgreenhow.org
Along my career journey I participated in MSU’s Lilly Fellowship where I learned about developing an integrated research-teaching agenda. My research on learning in social media spaces and the design of social media environments informs my teaching and my teaching informs the research questions I pursue. (You’ll learn more about some of my current research projects and my research team later in this course). For now, I’m excited to be using various technologies with you, to engage in rich discussions about Educational Psychology and Educational Technology – and their reciprocal relationship – in this course, and to learn from your ideas and interests. Welcome!
