I am Christine Greenhow (pronouns: she/her) and your instructor for this course, but please call me “Chris.” I’m an Associate Professor in the Educational Psychology and Educational Technology (EPET) program within the department of Counseling, Educational Psychology and Special Education (CEPSE) within our College of Education at Michigan State. I’m really excited to be teaching this course and to have you in it! I’ve been at MSU since 2012 and earned tenure in 2016. Prior to arriving at MSU, I was an Assistant Professor in the College of Education and the School of Information Studies at the University of Maryland, College Park. I also completed postdoctoral work at the University of Minnesota and at the Information & Society Project at Yale University, which resulted in a book: Social Media and Education: Toward a Digital Future (2016). https://mitpress.mit.edu/books/education-and-social-media. Before becoming a scholar, I was a public high school teacher in Massachusetts area (where I am from), an account rep in a tech start-up, and co-founder of an educational nonprofit called College Possible. When I’m not working I like to run with my teenage son (or try to catch him; he’s so fast!), hike with my family, have adventures outdoors and watch movies or series like Black Mirror on Netflix. Along my career journey I participated in MSU’s Lilly Fellowship where I learned about developing an integrated research-teaching agenda where my research on learning in social media spaces and the design of social media environments informs my teaching and my teaching informs the research questions I pursue. (I’ll share some of my current research projects and team members later in this course). For now, I’m excited to be using various technologies with you, to engage in rich discussions about Mind, Media & Learning in this course, and to learn from your ideas, interests, and experiences.
