This email contains important information as we look forward to CEP 956 Week 2 online (Sept 21-27).  Thank you for reading this email carefully. Note the assignments for this coming week, which we went over when we met on Monday.

Please Check-in with your Base Group at the beginning of the week by answering the Base Group Check-in questions early in the week (e.g., Tues or Wed) and then, Check-out by answering the Check-out questions at the end of the week.

1) Login to the course website.
2) Then, go to that week’s schedule page and find the Base Group Check-in (or Check-out) question for the week (e.g., W2 Sept 21-27 Online from the drop-down menu)
3) Email or otherwise contact your Base Group members when you have Checked-in and Checked-out to let them know you have done so. This way the group can help support its members, get to know its members, and build trust over time.

READINGS & ONLINE DISCUSSION

“Will Media Ever Influence Learning: A Heated Debate”
Our course begins with the seminal debate on whether or not media will ever influence learning. Please read the 3 readings listed on the schedule page for Week 2: Sept 21-27.

UPCOMING ASSIGNMENTS

  • Post your initial responses to the 2 guided reading questions (Q1 and Q2) in the Discussion Forum http://greenhow.educ.msu.edu/cep956fs19/forum/ by Thursday, Sept. 24 midnight EST
  • Post your response to your two peers’ initial posts (per question), so 4 responses from you total, by Saturday, Sept. 26 at midnight EST. Alternatively, you can post one response to a peer’s initial post and respond to someone else’s response to your initial post (per question), so still 4 responses from you total.
  • The goal of the online forum is to give you time to engage deeply with the readings & generate sparks for in-class discussion.

Email Announcement: Week 1
9/13/20
Hi Everyone,
I look forward to seeing you tomorrow night for our first synchronous CEP 956 class meeting: Monday, September 14, 2020 from 6-8:50pm. I decided that we should start together with an orientation to the course before having you work independently; therefore, no work for this class last week!

Tomorrow night we will use this Zoom link: https://msu.zoom.us/j/2314762101

Attached is the course SYLLABUS, which I will go over in detail tomorrow night.

COURSE OVERVIEW: In this course, we will be drawing on an interdisciplinary and emerging base of research and our own experiences to take a critical and informed approach to evaluating contemporary social media practices found in the everyday lives of students as well as those used in classrooms.  To learn more about the course overview, please read the course website’s home page: http://greenhow.educ.msu.edu/cep956fs20/
**NOTE: We are still working on the course site so keep that in mind as you review it.

COURSE WEBSITE

The website will serve as our hub for our collective exploration. By tomorrow night, this is where you will find links to the course syllabus, master schedule, weekly schedule pages, links to all readings, online discussion forum for our asynchronous weeks, and much of what you will need for this course. An important part of the course will be your reflections on your own use of social media as learners, scholars, teachers, activists, and policy makers, and on your learning to craft a publishable article.

You should have gotten an email asking you to login to the WordPress course site. Please try to login to the course website before class tomorrow night.

SOCIAL MEDIA: PLEASE EMAIL YOUR ANSWER TO 3 QUESTIONS by tomorrow night, if possible:
1) Which social media do you currently use and feel comfortable using?

2) Which social media do you want to learn more about?

3) Is there any social media that would not want to use as a student in this class?

Thanks so much. Any questions, please let me know. See you tomorrow night!

Chris

Welcome! CEP956 Pre-course Schedule Announcement

Hi Everyone,

I hope you are having a wonderful and rejuvenating summer. I am thrilled that you have enrolled in the advanced doctoral course: CEP 956: Mind, Media, & Learning.

As I mentioned in my email to each of you on 6/23/20, I am an Associate Professor in Educational Psychology and Educational Technology (EPET) within the College of Education, and I will be your course instructor.

I love teaching this course because in addition to a pre-defined curriculum, I build the course around your interests and demystify the ‘how to get published’ process. Most students will end up publishing their final paper. I am excited to meet you and learn about your different research interests and course and career goals.

Below is an overview of our course schedule so that you can plan ahead. Could you please REPLY to this email so that I know you got it?  Thank you!

Online Course Format

I have been teaching online, in-person, and hybrid courses for almost a decade. Based on guidance from our College, graduate student survey results, and what some of you have told me in your email responses, we will run this course partly synchronous online and partly asynchronous online, alternating weeks where we meet at the same time and weeks where people are reading deeply, engaging with the content and working on assignments at their own pace.

Schedule Overview for CEP 956 Fall 2020

As you can see from the Course Schedule, classes start on Wednesday, September 2, but our class is scheduled for Mondays throughout the semester; the first Monday, however, is the Labor Day holiday.  Therefore, I will be using the first full week of classes to gather information from you in several formats – asynchronously – and we will hold our first synchronous course meeting on September 14, 6-8:50pm.

**Please mark your calendars with this schedule below. More information, such as links to the course website, syllabus, assignments, etc., will be coming in the weeks ahead, but for now, I thought it would help you in your fall planning to record these dates.

Week of September 2-13
Asynchronous introductory activities
**Sent to you before the Labor Day weekend to minimize your working over the holiday.

If you haven’t already, please let me know if you have never used Zoom video-conferencing. No experience is required, but I would like to know if this technology is new to you.

I will be sending more information to get you set-up for this course in the days ahead.

Thank you!

Chris
