It was great meeting Chris and Madison! It was also nice to catch up with Selin and I am happy to get to take a course with her again! My name is Brittney and I am currently a 3rd year student in the CITE (Curriculum, Instruction, and Teacher Education) program. I am currently a TA for TE801 (Teaching Elementary Mathematics to Diverse Learners) and a field instructor to elementary interns at Lansing Public Schools. Prior to entering the Ph.D. program at MSU, I was a 5th grade teacher in Indianapolis Public Schools, a school system that I both taught in and attended as a child. I have a BA in Political Science and Religious Studies and a MA in Teaching and Instruction. My research interests are in elementary mathematics instruction and teacher preparation. Relevant to this course, I am interested in virtual education, teacher preparation, and media use (such as gaming) in developing mathematical understanding and number sense. I am also interested in how to facilitate equitable mathematics conversation in virtual elementary education settings. Two things that I am hoping to get out of this course is to working on my research for my practicum (which will fall into the intersection of virtual education, mathematics education, and teacher preparation.. still figuring it out!) and to learn more about the publishing process. I am also excited to learn from Selin, Madison, and Chris!

Hi Brittney,
That is amazing that you grew up in the public school system in which you eventually taught 5th grade. Your interests in elementary math instruction and teacher preparation make a lot of sense, given your experiences.

You wrote: that you are interested in “virtual education, teacher preparation, and media use (such as gaming) in developing mathematical understanding and number sense.” I can connect you to readings on gaming in education. By “virtual education” do you mean educating students online? Or teacher preparation online?

I’ll do my best to in this course to connect to your interests!
Chris
