The Clark and Kozma debate shows us how far media and technological innovation has come in the past thirty years. Kozma had the foresight to see a future where media was embedded in the contexts of our social lives and cognitive processes. Even posting on this forum on a computer, interacting with my peers, and engaging in social dialogue and cognitive learning, allows me to truly appreciate and recognize the role of media in learning. Information is literally in the palm of our hands as is our ability to network and socialize with others, allowing us to learn from and connect with others across the world. It is undeniable that media has an influence on learning. As schools across the world have transitioned to virtual learning in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, the question of whether and to what extend media can and will influence learning will continue to spark conversation and research around the field of media and learning.

Hi Brittney,
You make an excellent point that Clark lacked foresight on the technological front. My question to you, from a standpoint of Clark, how is our use of technology helping learning? From your statements above, technology gives us access to knowledge, but are we actually learning from our interactions and access? What does this learning look like?

Brittney, I really like how you unpack the connection and importance of the media in our learning. Even in today, during the pandemic, our all social interactions, discussions and construction of knowledge happens via virtual settings and by using variety of media resources. Also, I love Madison’s questions on learning! I’d love to talk more on those questions in class. But, for now I could say that all these resources we have and our access to them help us to construct social and emotional interaction, and cognitive awareness. I think learning occurs through having main resources and having access to them. For example, through material (like reaching information through media channels) and relational (our interactions with peers and profs) sources our learning experiences shape.

Hi Madison and Selin,

While I agree that an argument can be made that media gives us access to knowledge, I also believe, like Kozma, that it does not serve us to separate method of instruction from media. For me, learning is constructed from social, cultural, and cognitive processes and because media can facilitate these processes, it cannot be separated from our learning. To use this forum as an example, the global pandemic has prevented us from socially interacting and learning from one another. Without media, our learning processes would be severely hindered. Therefore, I believe that media does and will continue to influence our learning processes.
