In reflecting on the readings and your own experiences, the ‘literacies’ that you felt scholar-teachers need to develop to work in modern day environments included:

– The ability to communicate purposefully in different and changing social and cultural contexts
– Evolving and situationally specific literacies within technology spaces
– Contributing to multidirectional knowledge flows
– Skill in navigating open access dilemmas and power structures (e.g., “ownership”)
– Ability to critically consume digital media/ICTs both for selves and students
– Skills in co-construction of (digital) knowledge forms
– “Being able to deeply think about ethical and societal problems of these digital resources are vital in order to be a critical consumer of knowledge (in digital/AI systems)” (Selin)

You felt these were important because ”our work can’t just speak to our own familiar groups, but must extend and expand outward to engage others” (Madison). Also, resources or multimodal texts give learners a chance to interact with different ideas, cultures and languages by providing a global perspective (Selin) and other reasons.

QUESTIONS:
(1) Questions, burning issues, ideas or controversies you want to address?

–>Reading on a screen vs. reading a paper book — which side to take as an educator?
–>How do we address issues of access to technology/internet wherein opportunities to develop digital literacies might be limited?
—>Should there be a new digital take on media and information literacy?

(2) How did the literacies you identified as important align with those you are developing (or not developing) in graduate school?

(3) What does it mean to you to be a ‘public’ scholar or do publicly engaged scholarship in the age of social media?
