Hi, my name is Jeong-Yeon Park, a second-year doctoral student in the CITE program. I worked in a public elementary school in South Korea as a classroom teacher, and in Korea, an elementary school teacher teaches every subject, so did I. While in school, primarily I was in charge of the school broadcasting club, and really enjoyed operating morning assembly broadcast as well as creating video clips with upper grader students. Currently, my research interest lies in civics/citizenship education in the digital age. I would like to rethink and redefine what citizenship is, and which components construct citizenship in a digital era, but would like to consider citizenship as a multidimensional concept that is not limited to the only digital space but constitutes both offline and online domain. Therefore, through this course, I would like to think about how social media informs citizenship (or vice versa) and how to enhance media literacy skills in schools to help students become critical and engaged citizens, as I believe critical media literacy competency is also one of the important constructs of online citizenship.

I really look forward to learning with everyone in this course as we go along the semester. Thank you.

Hi Jeong,
Great to meet you! Like you I taught at the K-12 level in the United States (but secondary school English) before moving into academia. My former PhD student, Amy Chapman, did her dissertation on civics teachers use of social media to teach citizenship and civic engagement. I’ll connect you! Amy and I have also published an article related to your interests this year that connects to your interests, I think: Chapman, A. L., & Greenhow, C. (2021). Applying a critical lens to teachers’ use of social media for civic education, Contemporary Issues in Technology and Teacher Education, 21(2). https://citejournal.org/volume-21/issue-2-21/social-studies/applying-a-critical-lens-to-teachers-use-of-social-media-for-civic-education

We will definitely be covering this topic in the course and can connect you to a number of resources. Great to have you in the class!
Chris
