Out of the two readings, I found the points put forth by Elison to be more compelling and convincing. Personally, I found the idea of studying social capital and staying connected more interesting to read about than the relevance of the use of Facebook in class and its impact on academic performance. This is because there is more to learning from content around us that adds to our overall development rather than merely measuring success through test scores. The paper also brings forth aspects of a learner’s personality such as their self-perceptions that have connections with their academic journey, and I appreciated this overall look at a learner’s relationship with learning. Hence I found the Elison paper to be of higher importance and practical impact while studying the ways in which Facebook has added to the journeys of members of a specific learning community.
